Mosquito Coast was born from a love and respect for the long history of the Hawaiian shirt, taking it from the dreamy shores of those beloved islands to the remote corners of the globe. Each shirt tells a story, with original fine art inspired by the wonders of our world. And each one carries a taste of home: manufactured in the USA, printed on sturdy silk, carefully constructed. Not a souvenir, but an heirloom meant to be worn for years.

The kodkod is an adorable, tiny predator that stalks the remote and dense Valdivian rainforests along the southern Chilean coast. It is the smallest wild cat in the Americas, with most individuals around half the size of a housecat.
One of our founders went on an expedition to Chiloé Island to find this elusive and mischievous creature. After a week in the rainforest he caught a fleeting glimpse of one chasing a rodent across the trail at night. So few people have heard of the kodkod, let alone seen one, that he decided it had to go on a shirt.
Emerging from the forest, he searched for the right artist to capture its glory. Daniela lives in Valdivia and has spent a lifetime painting the region's flora and fauna from firsthand experience. She knows the kodkod by its local name, the güiña, and she has captured the true character of this little beast.

Petra is a pioneer of post-internet art, with work in the permanent collections of MoMA, LACMA, and the Hammer Museum, and shown at the Venice Biennale. When we approached her with this project, she took inspiration from the volcanoes of Nicaragua, near the Mosquito Coast we're named for. Cool Volcano is the result: a powerful eruption in an ethereal sky.
